This note is concerned with a simple mathematical model of how a population of bacterial spores decrease with time when subjected to a uniform temperature. The model assumes that there is a Boltzman distribution of energy among water or other molecules surrounding the assumed single lethal target in a spore; it assumes that repair is not possible; and that only molecules with energies above a critical level cause inactivation. The model provides new insight concerning the ‘kill-rate’ of spores during ultra heat treatment.  相似文献

This article interprets the meanings and motivations of refusal to pay water bills within a context of fragmented sovereignty. Residents of a village in the occupied Palestinian West Bank call for solutions to water shortages and failed infrastructure, but do so amidst capricious power, where would-be sovereigns evade accountability. Lacking avenues for direct engagement with authorities, residents speak in generalized ethical terms of their legitimate water claims, and they resort to bill refusal. Setting villagers’ bill refusals within the broader set of interactions between would-be sovereigns and subjects, this article contributes to anthropological scholarship on refusal by demonstrating how it can be a way of not only dismantling state power, but also summoning a responsible sovereign. Furthermore, it highlights how common dilemmas faced by refusers – dismissal and co-optation – can be exacerbated by the same evasive accountability against which they protest.  相似文献

Adapted tango dancing improves mobility and balance in older adults and additional populations with balance impairments. It is composed of very simple step elements. Adapted tango involves movement initiation and cessation, multi-directional perturbations, varied speeds and rhythms. Focus on foot placement, whole body coordination, and attention to partner, path of movement, and aesthetics likely underlie adapted tango’s demonstrated efficacy for improving mobility and balance. In this paper, we describe the methodology to disseminate the adapted tango teaching methods to dance instructor trainees and to implement the adapted tango by the trainees in the community for older adults and individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Efficacy in improving mobility (measured with the Timed Up and Go, Tandem stance, Berg Balance Scale, Gait Speed and 30 sec chair stand), safety and fidelity of the program is maximized through targeted instructor and volunteer training and a structured detailed syllabus outlining class practices and progression.  相似文献

The FDA-approved anti-cancer compound paclitaxel is currently produced commercially by Taxus plant cell suspension cultures. One major limitation to the use of plant cell culture as a production platform is the low and variable product yields. Therefore, methods to increase and stabilize paclitaxel production are necessary to ensure product security, especially as the demand for paclitaxel continues to rise. Although a stable transformation method for Taxus suspension cultures has been developed, stable transformant yields are low (around 1% of experiments) and the method does not translate to the Taxus cuspidata Siebold and Zucc. and Taxus canadensis Marshall cell lines utilized in this study. Therefore, a new method for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of Taxus callus and suspension cultures was developed through identification of the optimal Agrobacterium strain, inclusion of an anti-necrotic cocktail (silver nitrate, cysteine, and ascorbic acid) and increased recovery time for cells after cocultivation, the time following infection with Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Application of the increased recovery time to transformation of T. cuspidata line PO93XC resulted in 200 calluses staining positive for GUS. Additionally, two transgenic lines have been maintained with stable transgene expression for over 5 yr. This method represents an improvement over existing transformation methods for Taxus cultures and can be applied for future metabolic engineering efforts.  相似文献

To avoid submergence during sea‐level rise, coastal wetlands build soil surfaces vertically through accumulation of inorganic sediment and organic matter. At climatic boundaries where mangroves are expanding and replacing salt marsh, wetland capacity to respond to sea‐level rise may change. To compare how well mangroves and salt marshes accommodate sea‐level rise, we conducted a manipulative field experiment in a subtropical plant community in the subsiding Mississippi River Delta. Experimental plots were established in spatially equivalent positions along creek banks in monospecific stands of Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) or Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) and in mixed stands containing both species. To examine the effect of disturbance on elevation dynamics, vegetation in half of the plots was subjected to freezing (mangrove) or wrack burial (salt marsh), which caused shoot mortality. Vertical soil development was monitored for 6 years with the surface elevation table‐marker horizon system. Comparison of land movement with relative sea‐level rise showed that this plant community was experiencing an elevation deficit (i.e., sea level was rising faster than the wetland was building vertically) and was relying on elevation capital (i.e., relative position in the tidal frame) to survive. Although Avicennia plots had more elevation capital, suggesting longer survival, than Spartina or mixed plots, vegetation type had no effect on rates of accretion, vertical movement in root and sub‐root zones, or net elevation change. Thus, these salt marsh and mangrove assemblages were accreting sediment and building vertically at equivalent rates. Small‐scale disturbance of the plant canopy also had no effect on elevation trajectories—contrary to work in peat‐forming wetlands showing elevation responses to changes in plant productivity. The findings indicate that in this deltaic setting with strong physical influences controlling elevation (sediment accretion, subsidence), mangrove replacement of salt marsh, with or without disturbance, will not necessarily alter vulnerability to sea‐level rise.  相似文献

I investigated whether free-living adult golden-mantled ground squirrels ( Spermophilus lateralis ) could learn to associate a novel sound with the appearance of a predator. Using a classical conditioning protocol, I presented adult squirrels with a novel tone followed by the appearance of a model hawk. After repeated trials, I again measured the squirrels' behavioral responses to the tone and compared them with their pretraining responses. Individuals that experienced the tone paired with the hawk responded with antipredator behavior of longer duration after pairing than before and these responses were indistinguishable from responses to natural, conspecific alarm calls. By examining the process, rather than simply the pattern, of call recognition ontogeny, this study provides new evidence for a mechanism by which animals can develop the ability to respond to both conspecific and heterospecific calls.  相似文献
